Willie Nelson Monument to Uncover During the National Day of Marijuana Legalization Protest

Willie Nelson Monument to Uncover During the National Day of Marijuana Legalization Protest

Willie Nelson is expected to unveil his 3-1/2 meter statue in downtown Austin today in time for the national day of protest for the legalization of marijuana.

The privately funded monument for the country music legend near the new Moody Theater shows Nelson in a relaxed, standing pose and holding his guitar to the side, as if in conversation. Philadelphia sculptor Clete Shields said the leaning pose and heroic scale are intended to show Nelson's openness and whimsical side while honouring his tremendous influence on music and the city.

'We wanted to get a timeless Willie, an ageless Willie,' Shields said.

The unveiling takes place on April 20, or 4/20, which is slang for smoking marijuana and a day pro-legalisation forces have used for annual gatherings to demonstrate in support of the cause. Nelson is a well-known advocate of legalising marijuana and has been arrested several times for possessing it.

But the group that raised money for the statue and gave it to the city said the date of the unveiling is just a coincidence.

The Willie Monument is the third statue put up by Capital Area Statues Inc, a group of prominent Texas writers, film producers and musicians. One of the others honours three Texas writers and is located at Barton Springs. and the other honours the woman who fired a cannon to prevent the removal of the state archives from Austin. Capital Area Statues was formed to add more statues in Austin's public places and raises money for them by selling scale models of the work.

Lawrence Wright, one of the group's founders, said April 20 was chosen because Nelson was scheduled to perform at a tribute to Johnny Cash in Austin that night, not because of the counterculture significance.

"We didn't know anything about it; it seems everyone else knew the story on this," Wright said, laughing, adding that he doesn't think Nelson was doing it intentionally either. But he said the group decided to embrace the city's unofficial motto of 'Keep Austin Weird' and take the additional step of arranging for the unveiling to take place at 4.20pm to add to the symbolism.

Nelson is a 10-time Grammy Award-winning musician who has sold more than 40 million copies of 105 albums in a career built on not conforming to country music norms. Nelson fused country music with jazz and rock in the early 1970s to create the 'outlaw country' movement in Austin and helped give the city a reputation as a music city. His first major hit came when Patsy Cline recorded his song Crazy in 1961.

Nelson was also a founder of the Farm Aid movement to help family farmers and has appeared in 37 films and television shows, ranging from a starring role in the 1982 western Barbarosa to making a cameo in the 1998 Dave Chappelle stoner comedy Half Baked.

Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take
I'll be watching you

Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay
I'll be watching you

Oh can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
And every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake
I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace

I keep crying baby, baby, please

Oh can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
And every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake
I'll be watching you

Every move you make, every step you take

Pregnant Man Thomas Beatie Delivered Second Child

Pregnant Man Thomas Beatie Delivered Second Child

Thomas Beatie, the controversial "pregnant man," gave birth to his second child, a healthy baby boy, early this morning, "20/20" has learned.

Sources close to the couple say that it was a "natural childbirth" and that they have not yet decided on the boy's name. Beatie's wife, Nancy, will be breastfeeding their son, as she did with their daughter, Susan Juliette, who was born last June.

Photos of a bearded Beatie with a pregnant belly caused a sensation last year, leading to headlines about the world's first "pregnant man."

Born a woman named Tracy, Thomas Beatie, now 35, had sex-reassignment surgery and legally changed his gender from female to male in Hawaii.

Beatie, who kept his female reproductive organs, says that he decided to bear children, when his wife Nancy, 46, was not able to.

The couple described their unusual path to parenthood in an exclusive interview with Barbara Walters last year, during which they revealed that Thomas was expecting a second child.

Then in his first trimester, Beatie told Walters he did not go back on the male hormone testosterone after Susan's birth so he could have another baby.

"I feel good," he said. "I had my checkups with my hormone level, as far as the HCG. And everything is right on track."

In last year's exclusive interview, Beatie spoke to Walters about Susan's birth, which was also not via Caesarean section. He was in labor for 40 hours; Nancy Beatie cut the umbilical cord.

Charlize Theron: The Prometheus Enigma

Charlize Theron: The Prometheus Enigma

Oscar winning actress actor Charlize Theron heads into space, starring opposite Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace in Ridley Scott’s thrilling and thought provoking drama PROMETHEUS.

Shot entirely in 3D, legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott creates a new mythology in the film. He takes us on a momentous journey, posing intriguing questions about the origins of life. The story follows an intrepid team to the darkest corners of the universe. They are embroiled in a battle of epic proportions. At stake: the future of the human race.

Born in South Africa, Charlize Theron is one of the most diverse and engaging A-list actresses working today. Theron was already a well-defined movie star when, in 2003, she won an Oscar for her extraordinary performance as Daytona Beach prostitute-turned-serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Patty Jenkins’s extraordinary film “Monster.”

Prior to “Monster,” Theron had already attracted stellar notices for her performances in movies as diverse as “The Devil’s Advocate,” “The Cider House Rules” and “The Legend Of Bagger Vance.”

“Prometheus” is not Theron’s first experience of science fiction. In 2005 she played the title role in the film “Aeon Flux,” based on the animated television series created by Peter Chung.

Charlize Theron reveals her attraction to “Prometheus” and her passion for the films of director Ridley Scott in the following Q and A:

Q: How did you hear about the project?
A: I was in Malaysia and my manager called and said, “I’m sending you this script.” I’ve known Ridley for a couple of years, socially, so I knew he was working on this project. It was so secretive...I was in the middle of a rainstorm on a mountain, trying to read this script under a tree because it was the only place I could get reception.

Q: Damon Lindelof, the screenwriter, says you collaborated with him on fleshing out the character in the screenplay. How was that process?
A: I thought there was tremendous potential to explore themes that the script was already exploring through the eyes of a character who was so different from everybody else who’s on this mission. You have these scientists going out there – one is a believer, one really isn’t – and you play on all these themes, but to really experience all of that stuff from the point of view of somebody who comes from a much colder, more economic, ‘business suit’ sense of it was interesting. It’s really flattering and I was very excited to be partners with Damon and Ridley and to forge ahead.

Q: Who is Meredith Vickers?
A: She’s very different from anyone I’ve ever played. She’s a suit, essentially. She’s the machine that runs the machine that takes this mission into space and at first she comes across like a suit, very cold and frigid. She’s not a scientist; she’s not a believer. She runs a tight ship, but you can tell that she’s somehow going to be a problem. She’s somewhat of an enigma. The real excitement for me in playing this character is that in the third act you really strip her from her skin and you see what her bones are about and what she’s really doing there.

Q: Are you always looking for strong female roles?
A: I don’t ever set out to play a character with strength. I try to find the circumstances and try to be as honest as I can in those circumstances. There’s nothing more false than stepping in the wardrobe of a character who doesn’t authentically own those characteristics. Once we all understood the world, where we wanted to go with her and what we wanted to explore with her, that seeped in and all of a sudden I put that suit on and thought, “Yeah, I want to order somebody around!” You just kind-of find it.

Unravel the enigma that is Theron when “Prometheus” (3D) opens in cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Michael Fassbender: Engineered Android in “Prometheus 3D”

Michael Fassbender: Engineered Android in “Prometheus 3D”

One of the fastest-rising stars in the business, the 34 year-old German-born, Irish-raised Michael Fassbender has wowed multiplex and arthouse audiences alike over the past couple of years with searing, indelible turns in the likes of “Hunger,” “X-Men: First Class,” “Inglourious Basterds” and “Shame,” which saw him reunite with Steve McQueen. A passionate, instinctive actor, who better than Fassbender to breathe humanity into David’s cold hard exterior in the highly anticipated sci-fi adventure “Prometheus (3D)”?

From Ian Holm’s duplicitous Ash to Lance Henriksen’s dependable Bishop, androids have played a huge part in the Alien franchise. So it’s not a huge surprise to find that Prometheus also has an artificial humanoid on board its eponymous spaceship, in the blond-haired guise of Michael Fassbender’s David.

The character of David represents Prometheus' “company man.” An androgynous android with personality defects, David is the eyes and ears of the Weyland Corporation that funds the Prometheus mission.

Fassbender in the following q&a shares his take on humanity, working with Ridley Scott and Prometheus’ weighty themes.

Q: Who is Dav-eed?
A: He’s the robot. Or humanoid. Or android. Or whatever you want to call it. He’s like a butler. The first thing I wanted to do with him was to make him ambiguous. Should he be having emotions? I wanted to keep it ambiguous and have a lot of fun with it and enjoy it. I don’t know if that’s an easy description, but there’s so much comedy in him, actually, that I wanted to try to explore that as much as I could.

Q: Comedy? Even in an intense film like this?
A: Think Buster Keaton. Yesterday I kept banging my head off the screen on the ship and tripped over something else, and it was like a Buster Keaton moment! I also like the idea of treating him as a child, in certain respects. He’s been on this ship for two and a half years before everybody comes out of cryo-stasis.

Q: What does he do in that time?
A: He studies things, he watches films. There’s various things he soaks up. He’s been studying what Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) have come up with through their findings and research and the language that he thinks they [the Engineers] would speak, he’s been practicing that.

Q: Is David dangerous?
A: I think he knows his limits. He’ll know his limits when he gets there. Limit doesn’t exist for him. He will go until the point when he can’t go any further, physically. He doesn’t think about people’s suffering that much. He has an empathy and he’s developed that. But he’s more curious, like a child burning ants with a magnifying glass. There’s a cruelty there for sure, but it’s almost before a child comprehends cruelty. He does things for an end result.

But I don’t think he has any real moral compass. There’s something about him. He’s quite chuffed with himself. He’s very full of himself and he thinks he has most of the answers. In human company, he feels far superior.

Q: It is a film about creators and their relationship with their creations.
A: It’s about how the human beings are desperate in various ways to face this knowledge and get the answers to their questions, and not getting the answers to their questions. He’s never really been accepted and I think he does want to be accepted, very much so. But they always have that differential - we made you because we could. What’s interesting about him is that I do think this thing has been designed to behave like a human, but on a superior level, but it’s interesting that human personality traits start to bleed into the robot.

Q: Can you talk about the big ideas that are being tackled here?
A: What is the purpose of us being here? That’s the underlying question of the human race. That is why people are searching for heaven and for God, or Gods, as it was before. Why? There must be some purpose for us to be here, right? And that’s being explored in the film.

Q: Were you aware of the Prometheus myth?
A: I was. I do enjoy the greek classics and ancient history. The liver getting pecked away every night is a nasty affair, really.

Q: How does that tie in to the film?
A: Perhaps the fact that we keep going round in a circle, maybe that’s it. It’s a cyclical thing. There’s no resolution to the end of it, perhaps. It’s an ongoing quest.

Watch more of David in “Prometheus (3D)” when it opens June 7 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Trouble is, teenagers today are nothing like what they were just a few years ago, and Schmidt and Jenko discover that everything they think they know about being a teenager, from sex to drugs to rock and roll, is all wrong. More importantly, they both find they are still dealing with all of the adolescent problems they didn't address in their own teen years - and both will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.

Tutok Tulfo Celebrates 2nd Anniversary via 2-Part Public Service Special

Tutok Tulfo Celebrates 2nd Anniversary via 2-Part Public Service Special

When NEWS5 gave birth two years ago to Tutok Tulfo, its very first public service program, the progressive news organization vowed that it should serve as a trusted ally of Filipinos upholding righteousness and integrity.

To this day, the fierce expose’ program hosted by hard-hitting broadcast journalist Erwin Tulfo continues to expose the public to the backbone of socially relevant issues. On its two-part second anniversary special (April 21 and 28), Tutok Tulfo steps up by putting the police crime response management on a critical eye and giving an overview of the national mental health issues that are often overlooked.

Leading to its third year, the first leg of its two-part special features Filipino adults living with mental illness, suffering prejudice and discrimination from the public as they cope with being misunderstood, feared, laughed at, violated, and abused. This is an alarming condition that is unfortunately given relatively little attention, with the national budget allotting only 5% to mental health, not to mention the inadequate laws that should be pushing for more rehabilitation programs. Tutok Tulfo will take a closer look at the treatments offered in mental institutions and outpatient hospitals, and the potential negative effects of the lack thereof, as seen in crimes associated with people suffering from mental disorders.

This two-part special also delves into the standard operating procedures practiced by police officers in crime management. This segment includes a study on the initial response, investigation, and the intricacies of solving a crime and assesses the quality of service based on international standards. Anchored on the idea that apart from training and technical skills, a set of top-of-the line equipment is necessary in crime solution, this segment tries to present how these challenges grip the underprivileged stations in provincial regions and depressed areas, and how the officers cope with them.

Apart from its on-air special, Tutok Tulfo extends its gratitude to Kapatid viewers via the on-ground “Sakay sa Kaligtasan,” a ride-for-a-cause activity led by its host and motoring enthusiast-advocate, Erwin Tulfo. Together with the whole Tutok Tulfo team, Erwin will encourage more riders to join his journey and mission to help the public by providing a help desk and creating awareness on crime prevention, self-defense and rescue operations in its northern leg on April 21 at SM Supermalls (SM Novaliches, SM Marilao, SM Pampanga and SM Tarlac) and southern leg on April 28 at SM Supermalls (Novaliches, Molino, DasmariƱas and Sta. Rosa).

Be in the know and catch Tutok Tulfo’s eye-opening two-part special on April 21 and 28 at 11:30pm after Super Sine Prime on TV5, with earlier telecast at 7pm on Aksyon TV (Channel 41 in Mega Manila, Channel 29 in Metro Cebu and Davao, Channel 1 on Cignal Digital TV and Channel 59 on Sky Cable).

Pinoys Increasingly Rely on Social Media for News

Pinoys Increasingly Rely on Social Media for News

The emergence of the Philippines as one of the world's social media capitals —with one out of every three Filipinos on Facebook— has led to the widespread acceptance of social media as a key source of news and current information.

Earlier this year, social media came to the fore as the main channels of information concerning the magnitude 6.7 earthquake that hit Negros Island. And late last year, social media also proved crucial in reporting on, and finding help for, the victims of Typhoon Sendong in Mindanao.

“[Social media] are a direct connection to web users and TV viewers, and are an efficient avenue for gathering and delivering news. They are also platforms for receiving feedback and ideas about our programming,” says Howie Severino, Vice President for Multimedia Journalism of GMA Network.

The immediacy and impact of social media are such that they have been recognized by the Pulitzer Prize alongside traditional journalism stalwarts.

I think you’ll continue to see social media in the breaking news category, but it will show up in others as well,” said Pulitzer Prize administrator Sig Gissler of the growing number of prize-winning stories from social media.

Filipinos' own widespread adoption of social media for news consumption is reflected in the growing following accorded to the news accounts of the country's top broadcast networks.

GMA News, in particular, is the most-followed individual news account on Twitter and Facebook among local news broadcasters.

On social networking site Facebook, as of April 17, GMA News’ fan page had a total of 403,999 likes, while ABS-CBNNews.com had 223,510 and TV5’s JournalisMo posted 205,304.

Meanwhile, GMA News’ Twitter account, @GMANews, hit 726,855 followers as of April 17, while ABS-CBN News had 407,103. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC)’s Twitter account had a total following of 416,858 as of that time.

It is estimated that about 30% of Filipinos are active online, and according to a 2010 study by global digital marketing intelligence agency comScore, the Philippines scored the highest penetration of social media in the Asia-Pacific region, with more than 90 percent of its entire web population visiting a social networking site in February 2010.

Jasmine Curtis Shares Her 18th Birthday Wish

Contrary to what others expected, TV5 princess Jasmine Curtis Smith celebrated her 18th birthday on April 6, Good Friday without the lavish debutante’s party. Instead, she just decided to donate money to Cribs, an orphanage for abandoned babies that she and Anne consider close to their hearts.

I just want to be practical. I don’t want to spend so much money on a big party for just one night,” Jasmine said in a report by featured at Interaksyon.com.

I would rather spend a lot on doing charity work. Makakatulong pa ako sa maraming tao at magiging meaningful pa ang birthday ko.” Anne Curtis' younger sister further said.

When asked about her birthday wishes? Jasmine said:

I want more success when it comes to work. And of course, I want to finish my high school.”

Jasmine is now busy doing several TV guestings (she will be a featured guest playing a ghost character in Pidol's Wonderland for the whole month of May) while pushing her schooling in Australia.

Ara Mina Brings Feud with Sister Cristine Reyes to Court

Ara Mina Brings Feud with Sister Cristine Reyes to Court

"Punung-puno na ako.

Hanggang makakapagpasensiya, magpapasensiya ako. Pero hindi ko na kaya!

Said the very emotional Ara Mina on Wednesday afternoon, April 18, right after she filed a libel and grave coercion case against her half-sister Cristine Reyes at the Quezon City fiscal’s office.

According to ABS-CBNNews.com, Ara finally decided to file a case after she learned from their relatives that Cristine continously badmouthing her related to the alleged dispute over the remaining balance for a house they bought for their mother.

According to report, Cristine wanted Ara's SUV as payment for the remaining balance for the said Quezon City townhouse.

Aside from that, Ara said Cristine keeps on attacking her verbally since Holy Week. To prove her claim, Ara showed the press Cristine's malicious text message which contained “Kung ayaw niyo manggulo ako sa buhay niyo, bayaran utang niyo sa akin. Kung wala kayo pangbayad, ibigay niyo hinhingi ko [referring to Ara's SUV]. ”

Cristine continued by texting "I'm sure ibebenta mo ‘yang laspag mong katawan na pinagsawaan na ng lahat. Daig pa aso sa sobrang kati.”

However, Ara clarified that she filed charges not to claim money from Cristine but only to “teach her a lesson” for her attitude.

"Para maturuan siya ng leksiyon, kasi hindi na tama yung ginagawa niya.

"Mahirap sa ’kin ‘tong gagawin ko dahil sikat siya ngayon, ayoko siyang masira. Pero masyado niya nang hinahamak yung pagkatao ko, niyuyurakan na niya." Ara said.

TV Vampire Classic “Dark Shadows” Now a Big Screen Comedy

TV Vampire Classic “Dark Shadows” Now a Big Screen Comedy

From visionary director Tim Burton comes the big-screen adaptation of the TV vampire classic “Dark Shadows” featuring an all-star cast, led by perennial collaborator Johnny Depp.

The film also stars Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Jonny Lee Miller, Jackie Earle Haley, Chloe Grace Moretz, Victoria Winters and Gully McGrath.

“Dark Shadows” begins in the year 1752, when Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Depp) has the world at his feet - or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

The film marks Depp’s eighth collaboration with visionary filmmaker Tim Burton, who most recently reimagined Lewis Caroll’s “Alice in Wonderland,” also starring the actor. Burton remembers the original “Dark Shadows” TV series as a childhood obsession and constant distraction from his homework. “I just loved the tone of it,” the director recalls. “It was about the music and languid pace and how seriously the actors took it. It was basically a soap opera, but with a supernatural undercurrent to it, which made it very different. It was like a weird kind of nightmare in the mid-afternoon. There was nothing quite like it.

Their goal from the beginning was to honor the Dan Curtis-created series while making an original film with a contemporary sensibility. Legendary producer Richard D.Zanuck, who marks his sixth collaboration with Burton, was thrilled with the filmmaker’s take on the world of “Dark Shadows.” “The tone encapsulates a lot of humor, a lot of compassion, and although there’s blood, it’s hardly a typical vampire movie,” Zanuck says. “There are eccentric characters, and it’s a little off-center, a little over the top, and very much Tim Burton. You probably hear this a lot, and it always sounds disingenuous to say, but this movie has something for everyone. It’s got very passionate, operatic moments, heartbreaking tragedy, romance, terror and this unexpected humor.”

When the script came in, you could see what an incredibly fun ride it was going to be,” adds Oscar-winning producer Graham King. “But then you add the layer of Tim Burton’s magical directing and this incredible cast. Tim is also being very respectful of the series because we’re all cognizant that there are a lot of `Dark Shadows’ fans out there. He’s making a film that is as unique as the series was, but it’s obviously made for today’s audiences. It’s big in scope, and really, really funny.”

David Kennedy, who produces along with Zanuck, King, Depp and Christi Dembrowski, was the producing partner of television icon Dan Curtis, who created “Dark Shadows” and introduced television audiences for the first time to a sexy, sympathetic vampire protagonist. “There was never a vampire on television until Barnabas Collins,” Kennedy relates. “And one of the things that makes Barnabas so different is that he doesn’t like being a vampire, but he knows he’s condemned to be one forever, so he’s an enormously sympathetic character. And what’s thrilling about the movie is that it’s absolutely loyal to the key characters, but it’s an original take on the series.

Opening across the Philippines on May 10, “Dark Shadows” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

GMA-7 Wins 3 World Medals and 6 Finalist Certificates in 2012 New York Festivals

GMA-7 Wins 3 World Medals and 6 Finalist Certificates in 2012 New York Festivals

GMA News and Public Affairs has bagged three Silver World Medals and six Finalist Certificates at the prestigious 2012 New York Festivals Television and Film Awards held on April 17 at the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

I-Witness’ "Lapnos" (Burn) episode won the Silver World Medal for the Social Issues and Current Events category, while GMA News TV’s Front Row brought home two Silver World Medals – one for the Social Issues category for its "Yaman sa Basura" (Child Urban Miners) episode and another one for the Biography/Profiles category for the documentary program’s "Bente Dos" (Twenty-Two) episode.

I-Witness’ "Lapnos" gives viewers a glimpse inside the burn unit of the Mindanao Burn Center in Davao City . Here, Peabody Award winner Jay Taruc learns about the victims’ individual – at times, harrowing – stories.

"We are honoured to receive this silver medal from the NYF. Lapnos was a heartbreaking yet powerful story that moved all of us who produced it. But what makes this story truly remarkable, apart from the recognition it recently received, is its power to raise awareness on this small, forgotten hospital in Mindanao . Even now, we continue to receive pledges for the hospital and its patients, and for this we are truly grateful. We dedicate this award to the burn victims who shared their story with us and hope that more can be done to alleviate their suffering," says Angeli Atienza, program manager for I-Witness’ Lapnos episode.

"This documentary was passionately executed by the men and women of I-Witness. We dedicate this award to our dear 12 year old Christy, who succumbed to complications from her burn wounds. God bless you and God bless Mindanao," adds Executive Producer Lea Llamoso.

Front Row’s "Yaman Sa Basura" tells the story of twin boys risking life and limb working in an urban mine in order to help their family. "Bente Dos" (Twenty-Two), on the other hand, narrates the life of a couple living in Manila ’s slums, together with their children - all 22 of them.

"GMA News TV is just a year old channel. With Front Row's two medals, we take so much pride and honor to receive more medals than any other Philippine network from the New York Festivals this year. Our local audience has embraced the non-traditional, no-host, no-voiceover documentary format and we are glad that jurors from international award-giving bodies have appreciated it as well," says Johnson Tam, Program Manager for Front Row.

Meanwhile, three GMA entries brought home Finalist Certificates including the I-Witness episode on compressor mining presented by Peabody award-winning journalist Kara David dubbed Gintong Putik; the GMA special that delved deep into the current situation of the country’s education system in Report Card; and Born To Be Wild’s The Born Expeditions Finale: The Monster of Mae Klong and The Great White Shark where, in the presence of a Philippine wildlife team, a world breakthrough in sting ray research was documented on video.

Leading Philippine news channel GMA News TV – only on its first year of airing but is already making its presence felt even in the international arena – also brought home three more Finalist Certificates: GMA News TV’s historical docudrama tracing the evolution of Dr. Jose Rizal’s writings, Pluma: Si Rizal, Ang Dakilang Manunulat (Rizal, The Great Writer); and two Reel Time episodes - Lusong and Tira. Lusong (Live to Dive) tells the story of a father and his son’s race to earn enough money through diving while Tira (Infected) narrates the alarming cases of young teens suffering from sexually transmitted diseases.

The New York Festival International Television and Film Awards is one of the world’s most prestigious award-giving bodies dedicated to both the television and film industries. It encourages next generation story-tellers to break new grounds by honouring the winners within each competition each year.
